ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen Borsody was born in 1911 in Northern Hungary which after the First World War became a part of Czechoslovakia. Educated in Hungarian, Slovak and Czech schools, he received the degree of Doctor of Juridical and Political Science (J.U.D.) from the Charles University in Prague in 1934, and the degree of Privatdocent of Eastern European History from the University of

Budapest in 1946.

He was a journalist in Prague and Budapest. After World War II, he was appointed Counselor and Press Attache of the Hungarian Embassy in Washington. In 1947 he resigned his diplomatic post in protest against the Communist seizure of power in Hungary He entered the academic profession and became an American citizen. A professor (now emeritus) of European and Russian history at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, he has published several books both in English and Hungarian. With his wife, he lives now in Boston.
